How To Unclog Your Sink

Unclog Your Sink With A Plunger

Do you have a sink or bathtub drain that is clogged or draining slowly?  Don't run to the store and buy chemical drain cleaners, try using a plunger first.

Steps to Unclog Your Sink With A Plunger

STEP 1  Buy a New Plunger

Please don't use a plunger that has been previously used in a toilet.  That's just gross.  Buy a new plunger just for sink plunging.  Mark it clearly as "SINK ONLY" just to keep it separated from other plungers you might have.

STEP 2  Find the Sink Overflow

Okay, you have your clean plunger, now let's get that drain working again.  The first thing you need to check for is an overflow opening in the sink or tub.  Each sink or tub can be different and some sinks don't even have one.  Once you locate the overflow opening, you'll need a way to plug it while you're plunging.  Use your finger or a wet rag held in place for larger openings.

 STEP 4  Plunge the Sink

With the overflow opening plugged, run the water to get an inch or two in the sink.  This helps make a better seal while you're plunging.  Now go at it.  Plunge the plunger up and down several times making sure to hold  it down to the sink to make a seal.  Then remove the plunger and take a look.  You might see a bunch of gunk floating in the water.  This is good.  You're pulling it up and starting to clear the drain.  Repeat this process until (hopefully) the drain start flowing properly.

If your not having any luck try removing the drain stopper, and try again.  This is a good time to clean the stopper of any additional gunk as well.  If you still can't get the drain flowing, it might be time to reach for the drain cleaning solutions and give them a try.  But more often then not, the plunger trick will work and you'll be good to go.
